Holocaust Memorial Day 2027
Wednesday 3 February 11:00 until 15:00
University of Sussex Campus : Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts, University of Sussex Campus, BN1 9RA
Holocaust Memorial Day 2027 explores the theme No Place for Prejudice, inviting us to consider how discrimination takes root, how it can be challenged, and how testimony continues to shape our understanding of the past and present.
The event is delivered in partnership with the Centre for German‑Jewish Studies and the Weidenfeld Institute of Jewish Studies. It is generously supported by the Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR),
Programme
Session 1 – Film Screenings, Discussion and Q&A (11.00 –12.15)
Introduced by Judy Ironside MBE, Founder and President of UK Jewish Film, this session features two short films exploring memory, identity, and the impact of prejudice:
- Extinguished Lives – Dir. Roberta Grosman (16 mins)
- Hasta Pronto – Dir. Jennifer Skarbnik, Mexico (14 mins)
Following the films there will be a short Q&A.
Break and Exhibition (12.15 – 1.15pm)
Guests are invited to visit the Lost Books Exhibition in the ACCA foyer and enjoy refreshments in the ACCA café. An informal speaker lunch will take place in the Gardner Tower Mezzanine.
Session 2 – Survivor Testimony (1.25 – 2.45)
We are honoured to welcome Hedi Argent to Sussex to share her experiences.
Born in Vienna in 1929, Hedi’s testimony traces her family’s persecution following the Anschluss, their desperate escape from Austria, and the loss of 27 members of their extended family in the Holocaust. Her story reflects resilience, displacement, and the enduring impact of antisemitism.
Her testimony will be followed by a Q&A chaired by Professor Gideon Reuveni, Director of the Sussex Weidenfeld Institute of Jewish Studies.
Closing Remarks (2.45 - 3.00pm)
