Biography

Joseph McMullen is an Assistant Professor in Law specialising in air quality, public health, and environmental law. His research focuses primarily on fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and the legal regulation of particulate pollution. 

Joseph is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the European Environmental Law Forum, the British Ecological Society, and the Socio-Legal Studies Association. He previously held positions on the Research Ethics Committee and the executive Research and Knowledge Exchange Committee at Bournemouth University. .

Joseph has mentored students to participate in the BISA Climate Change Negotiation and the UNICEF Observatory of Human Rights Policy and Advocacy Competition. He led the coordination of the 8th Annual European Environmental Law Forum Conference at Bournemouth University in 2021 and coordinated three conferences in collaboration with Kyiv National Economic University; the ‘Artificial Intelligence in the Digital Society’ roundtable in 2023, the ‘AI and Human Rights: Current Challenges and Future Prospects’ Conference in 2024, and the Law and Emerging Technologies Conference in 2025.
