Research

My research addresses the intersection of educational with social (dis)advantage. I have two core areas of expertise:  discipklinary exclusion from school and inequalities in access to higher education.

I am currently involved in the following research projects:

  • DfE Evaluation of the Alternative Provision Innovation Fund, in partnership with Ecorys UK.
  • Supporting the Supporters, an access initiative focusing on care expereinced young people, commissioned by the Sussex Learning Network

I would welcome enquiries from doctoral students who share these areas of interest.

Currrent students are researching areas such as:

  • Higher Education access policies in Nigeria
  • The links between disadvantage and creativity in Early years settings
  • Inclusive education in Mexico and England

Students who have recently successfully completed their doctorates have worked on areas such as:

  • Underachievement of White working class boys
  • Pedagogy in a specialist behaviour setting
  • Narratives of poverty in Early years
  • Parental involvement and student voice initiatives in Ghana

  • Inquiry in to School Exclusions - Inequalities in Rates of Exclusion for the Office of the Children’s Commissioner for England

  • Evaluation of The Villiers Park Scholars Programme for Villiers Park Educational Trust

  • Initial Teacher Education and the Disciplinary Exclusion of Black Pupils for the TDA/Multiverse

  • Addressing working class underachievement for Multiverse
