Research

My research addresses the intersection of educational with social (dis)advantage. My research interests focus on the relationship between educational and social (dis)advantage.  Specific areas of interest include:  school exclusion as a disciplinary process; access to higher education; multiagency working, inclusing in relation to Virtual Schools in England; approaches to disadvantage at policy level in England, including in relation to the Pupil Premium and child and family poverty.

Completed research studies include:

  • Study commissioned by one English Virtual School to inform its strategic response to the Department of Education’s widening of its remit to Children with a Social Worker (CWSW)
  • Evaluation of the Alternative Provision Innovation Fund in partnership with ECORYS
  • Overcoming Barriers to Participation in Higher Education for the Sussex Learning Network

  • Evaluation of the Higher Education Champions Coaching Programme for Looked After Children for Aimhigher London South

  • Inquiry in to School Exclusions - Inequalities in Rates of Exclusion for the Office of the Children’s Commissioner for England

  • Evaluation of The Villiers Park Scholars Programme for Villiers Park Educational Trust

  • Initial Teacher Education and the Disciplinary Exclusion of Black Pupils for the TDA/Multiverse

  • Addressing working class underachievement for Multiverse
