Role
Lars Otto Naess is a social scientist with 30 years of experience with climate change, development and agriculture. He holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences from the University of East Anglia. Prior to joining IDS, he worked with the Center for International Climate Research (CICERO) at the University of Oslo (1995-2008) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) (1999-2002). During 2013-2015, he was Associate Professor II at the Department of International Environment and Development Studies (Noragric), Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU).
His current research interests include social and institutional dimensions of adaptation to climate change, policy processes on climate change and agriculture at national and sub-national levels, the role of local knowledge for adaptation to climate change, and adaptation in the context of international development. Over recent years, he has worked extensively on the political economy of climate policy responses and their equity and justice implications. Geographically, most of his recent work has focused on South Asia (India) as well as East and Southern Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa and Tanzania).
