For many Sussex alumni in North America, memories of their time at the University endure, shaped by intellectual freedom, a global outlook, and life-changing opportunity. Through the Friends of the University of Sussex Masters Scholarship, that experience is being extended to a new generation, delivering equally transformative outcomes.
Puerto Rican-born Lilly Soto Cintrón, currently studying for an MA in Creative and Critical Writing, is among the latest scholars to benefit from alumni generosity. Her journey is a compelling testament to the lasting impact of a Sussex education, and the vital support our US alumni continue to play.
Before arriving at Sussex, Lilly had shown remarkable resilience and determination. Growing up in Puerto Rico’s public education system, she witnessed inequality first-hand. She devoted a decade to supporting English language learners and teachers, while nurturing her own passion for storytelling. She started to dream of postgraduate study, but financial and personal barriers stood in her way, until Sussex, and its global alumni, opened the door.
“It was thanks to the American Friends scholarship that I could fully embrace this opportunity,” Lilly says.
At Sussex, she has found more than a degree: she has discovered a community and a catalyst for growth. Immersing herself fully in university life, Lilly speaks of the library as “one of my happy places” and has built a diverse, international network of peers and collaborators. Freed from financial pressure, she has focused entirely on her studies, her creative work, and her ambitions ahead.
“I’ve never had as many opportunities in one place.”
Her experience reflects values alumni know well, openness, creativity, and global connections, while highlighting the tangible impact of their continued support. Because of that generosity, students like Lilly are not only accessing a Sussex education, but also redefining what is possible for themselves and the communities they will go on to serve.
“I will forever be grateful,” she says. “This year at Sussex has transformed my education, my health, my outlook, and my ability to dream of a better future.”
Looking ahead, Lilly hopes to build further experience before returning to the US and Puerto Rico, where she aims to support underprivileged communities and inspire others to pursue their dreams. For Sussex alumni, her story is both a reflection of their own journeys and a powerful reminder of the difference they continue to make.
