Wednesday 3 June 10:00 until 16:00
University of Sussex Campus : C333, Arts C and over Zoom
Speaker: Sussex China Club
Part of the series: Sussex Asia Centre
On Wednesday 3 June the Sussex Asia Centre and Sussex China Club are running a workshop on Rethinking Chinese Selves in a Society of Suspension and Involution.
Xuanfu ("suspension") is often used to describe contemporary Chinese life as both overstructured and ungrounded. At the same time, neijuan ("involution") circulates widely as a vernacular diagnosis of intensifying competition and diminishing returns. This workshop explores how these diagnoses might relate to changes in the sense of self in China today. Rather than asuming their equivalence, we ask how suspension and involution intersect, reinforce once another, or diverge for people across different ethnographic contexts.
This is a hybrid event running from 10am (BST) to 4pm, in room C333 (Arts C building) or over Zoom (https://lse.zoom.us/j/3817408302).
This workshop is organised between the Sussex Asia Centre and the Sussex China Club.
