DISCO! Music, Image, Dance, is co-edited by Mimi Haddon (Associate Professor in Music), Michael Lawrence (Reader in Film Studies) and Arabella Stanger (Associate Professor in Drama), and published by Oxford University Press in 2025. This collection of 22 chapters by academics, artists and DJs takes an interdisciplinary and transnational approach to exploring disco’s untold stories from its popular heyday to its many afterlives.
Illustrating how disco shows up in multiple and surprising ways across its times and spaces, the collection tracks the ubiquity of disco not only in relation to music and nightlife but also fashion, film, literature, poetry, dance, performance art, digital media, museums, exercise, activism, and community.
All are welcome to attend the book's on-campus launch, kindly co-sponsored by Centre for Study of Sexual Dissidence (Sex Diss) and Sussex Performance Events and Research (SPEAR). Please join us on Wednesday 13 May, 5:30-7pm in Arts A108, where the editors will discuss the book’s journey and spotlight the book's varied contents, and Michael Lawrence will read from his individual chapter on disco aerobics.
