Prayers for the Stolen: Adapting Gender in the Era of Narco Violence
Wednesday 18 March 17:00 until 19:00
University of Sussex Campus : Arts A 108
Speaker: Prof. Ilana Luna (Arizona State University)
Part of the series: Film Studies Research Seminar Series
The talk will discuss key concepts from Ilana Luna’s 2018 book Adapting Gender: Mexican Feminisms from Literature to Film, with an updated case study of Tatiana Huezo, a prize-winning documentarian, who launched her debut 2021 fiction film, Noche de Fuego/ Prayers for the Stolen on Netflix. The film, an adaptation of Jennifer Clement’s 2012 homonymous novel, builds on Huezo’s corpus as it considers the escalating gender-based violence unleashed under Felipe Calderón’s “war on drugs.”
