Wendy Carey, Staff Wellbeing Manager
As we mark World Mental Health Day today (10 October), we caught up with Wendy Carey, Staff Wellbeing Manager within the Organisational Development, Culture and Wellbeing team. In her role, Wendy focuses on making sure staff know about the support available to them, and has recently published the new Wellbeing Support Guide which is now available on the Wellbeing Hub. Find out more about Wendy and what she loves about her role at Sussex.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A carpenter! My dad had his own carpentry and joinery business and from a young age I would watch him making staircases or furniture and be amazed. However, after working with my dad at weekends in my last year of school, I quickly realised that carpentry skills aren’t naturally passed down from father to daughter and I changed my career choice.
What’s one activity or hobby that makes you lose all track of time?
Decorating. I get totally absorbed in it all; creating Pinterest boards and mood boards, choosing paint, blasting out music whilst sanding walls and dressing a room to make it look inviting and cosy. I call it a hobby, as I decorate and upcycle pieces of furniture all the time and my husband sighs in exasperation when I ask if we can just pop to B&Q quickly...
Who inspires you and why?
I find inspiration in many people, but one that stands out is a close friend who used to be my manager. Her natural leadership qualities empower, support and nurture. During a challenging period in my life, she displayed unwavering belief in me. Despite our shift from manager to friend she remains my go-to person when I need to discuss ideas or challenges. Her unshakable faith in my ability continually motivates and inspires me.
What’s your favourite aspect of your role?
Getting to meet people and learn about their roles at Sussex. I am fortunate to work with some fantastic colleagues who share my passion for wellbeing and creating a positive work environment. It’s incredibly rewarding to play a part in enhancing the health and happiness of others.
What’s your favourite place on campus and why?
I love the Meeting House Chapel. It’s a beautiful space and I find it very calm and soothing. I get lost in the beauty of the chapel, especially when the sun shines in and lights the differently coloured glass. It’s the perfect space to have five minutes to reflect and recharge or to join in with a meditation session.
What’s the best piece of advice anyone’s given you?
My mum always used to say: “Be kind to people and treat them as you’d want to be treated yourself”. It’s advice I’ve shared with my own children, and I think it’s a simple mantra to live by.
