Marking and assessment boycott information
Please visit the industrial action page on the Student Hub and read through the answers to frequently-asked questions, which we are keeping updated. This page includes specific information for finalists. You may find it helpful to bookmark the page in your browser and check it regularly.
This week we have published further information about job prospects for finalists, alongside the marking and assessment boycott letter for employers [PDF 114KB], which is available for you to download. We recommend that you continue with your job hunting as planned, sharing this letter with employers if you are affected by the boycott.
Whilst awaiting your final award, we would encourage you to include the most recent or predicted grades that you have received from the University in your applications.
Please also remember that the Sussex Careers and Entrepreneurship team continues to be available to support you throughout the summer and for three years after you graduate. The team can support you with job applications and interviews, or advise you on going freelance or starting your own business or social enterprise. We recommend you regularly browse the many graduate job vacancies on their CareerHub job listings. You can also continue to attend the employer events they arrange across the year.
Sign up to ‘Okta’ single sign-on to keep using University software
To improve the University’s IT security, our IT Services teams are making changes to the way we access University IT systems. We need your help to put some of these changes in place and to help keep you and the University protected against online threats.
‘Okta’ Single Sign-On (SSO) is software which ensures you can access University systems and software applications safely and securely. It will mean you only need a single password to sign in to the University system and access all the software applications and tools that you need.
Please read the full update on the Student Hub and sign up to Okta as soon as possible. It should take less than a minute to do.
Where to eat and drink on campus this summer
A number of campus outlets will be closed for the quieter months of the summer vacation while venues like EAT Central will be hosting summer school students, making it better to head elsewhere at peak times.
The £2 meal deal is continuing as part of the University’s cost of living support package for students and staff. You can find the deal at the Botanical Cafe in the Jubilee Building from 26 June.
Elsewhere, IDS Bar and Kitchen and Falmer Bar will be open on weekdays.
Visit the Student Hub for your full guide on where to eat and drink over the summer.
Join us for the Brighton Pride Parade on 5 August
Sussex is once again a proud partner of Brighton & Hove Pride, the UK’s biggest Pride event. Celebrating diversity and inclusivity, Pride brings our community together to fundraise, have fun and campaign for LGBTQ+ equality.
We are delighted to be taking part in the Parade on Saturday 5 August with a walking party, and invite current students, staff and alumni to join us on the day. All are welcome, however places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Read more about the event on the Student Hub.
To register your interest in taking part in the Parade with us, please complete this form by 5pm on Friday 30 June.
University of Sussex boosts UK economy by almost half a billion pounds each year
The University of Sussex contributes £495 million each year to the UK economy and supports over 7,800 jobs, as outlined in our latest Economic Impact Report.
Watch our short, animated video that brings to life the positive impact the University, and you as our students, make within the region and across the UK.
Funded international short professional placements
Have you secured short-term, international work experience this summer? You may be eligible to apply for Turing funding which offers financial support to students to work abroad. The role must be work based (not academic research), for at least four weeks and take place before 31 August 2023.
The deadline to apply is 30 June 2023. To find out more and apply, please visit CareerHub.
Vote in the Clubs and Societies committee elections this week
Voting for the Clubs and Societies committee elections is open until 12 noon on Friday 23 June.
Each committee consists of eight members from all across sports clubs/societies, who represent their societies category or allocated sports teams in decisions on the groups, allocation of funding, new clubs/societies applications and more.
Visit the Students’ Union website to find more information and cast your vote.
Meet the Turner Prize artist shortlist: Jesse Darling
As Education Partner for the Turner Prize 2023, the world’s leading prize for contemporary art, we will be taking a deep dive into the artist shortlist announced in April of this year. We invite you to join us over the following weeks and meet each of the artists.
The shortlisted artists for this year’s Turner Prize are; Jesse Darling, Ghislaine Leung, Rory Pilgrim and Barbara Walker. This week we are shining a spotlight on Jesse Darling in our article on the Student Hub.
With best wishes,
Kelly
