An expert in international trade at Sussex has warned that the UK should expect a 'hard pounding' in forthcoming negotitations with the US.
Quoted in Telegraph article, Professor Jim Rollo, Deputy Director of the UK Trade Policy Observatory, told MPs on the Brexit Committee:
“By moving to bilateral [deals] [Trump] is maximising the US’s political power in that agreement.
“If you were a Central American nation in the 2000s, the US turned up, dropped their book on your table, and said ‘sign here’. You might try to negotiate for three years, but you’d end up signing there. He wants to go back to that.
“If we’re at front of queue for one of those, I think you can look for a quite hard pounding, and possibly only in one direction.”
