"[Migration].. is a field that Sussex scholars pioneered more than three decades ago when migration was much less discussed publicly.
Migration Studies at the University of Sussex has been ranked first in the world by ScholarGPS 2026 on a lifetime/cumulative basis.
Paul Statham, Professor of Migration and Director of the Sussex Centre for Migration Research (SCMR), said
“We’re delighted that Sussex has been ranked No.1 in the world for Migration Studies for the second year running, underlining that SCMR – a Centre of Excellence at Sussex - continues to stand at the forefront of high-quality migration scholarship. This is a field that Sussex scholars pioneered more than three decades ago when migration was much less discussed publicly. We see this recognition as an achievement for the way that SCMR works as a community, a space that brings together staff, researchers and MA students as “migrationists”, and that reaches into the local NGO community through activism and engages internationally through our research partnerships across the globe.”
The University of Sussex has also been ranked first in the world for Development Studies for the last 10 consecutive years by QS World University Rankings by Subject.
ScholarGPS ranks Social Sciences at Sussex 47th in the world, with Geography 38th and Anthropology 47th.
