Video Journalism (P4097)

This module will introduce you to a range of video journalism from documentaries to features. The relationship between narrative structures, aesthetic modes and content will be analysed in best-practice examples as a foundation for your own production of a 4-5 minute video package (packaged for the web). Theoretical readings will focus on approaches to video journalism (social, economic, technological) and the evolution of the video package for multimedia distribution, the creation of media narratives for video, video-specific strategies for content communication, and styles and aesthetics of well-known video journalists and documentarians. Theoretical discussions will keynote storytelling skills, ethical and legal issues, all of which are transferable to other spheres (especially audio/podcasting and online multi-media journalism).

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 48 hours of contact time and about 102 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
