The barriers to the development of a new product or service have never been lower, and the opportunities for computing professionals creating their own company are manifest. This course will introduce the role of the modern entrepreneur in technology and society, and examine the steps in creating a company, including:
- Surviving the early stages of business development, including failure rates in new and small enterprises and barriers to growth and development.
- Including a business plan for a new venture – including risks and liabilities; problems and pitfalls, and potential profit and success.
- The protection of ideas and intellectual capital.
- Financial planning and funding a new enterprise, including via 'friends, family and fools', business angels and venture capitalists.
- Building customer relationships and sales.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 24 hours of contact time and about 126 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology.
