Narratives Beyond Conflict: Interdisciplinary Perspectives
A panel will examine how narratives long associated with conflict in Colombia can be reshaped though three different but complementary perspectives.
In this Research Café hosted by the Centre for International Education (CIE), a panel of experts will examine how narratives long associated with conflict in Colombia can be reshaped through three complementary perspectives:
- Reparations and institutional innovation
- Cultural and urban transformation, and
- Knowledge, learning and education.
The first study, by Sonia Tequia, explores how restorative sanctions and TOAR projects can be governed within Colombia’s fiscal constraints. It proposes a financial and intersectoral framework to support transitional justice without generating new public debt, while promoting productive reactivation.
The second study, by Sharon Álvarez, examines how cultural representations and urban transformations can reshape Colombia’s global image beyond narratives of drug trafficking and violence. Focusing on Cali, it explores how urban planning and cultural industries construct alternative representations of the city and nation through image analysis and visual semiotics.
The third study, by Alejandro Farieta, investigates how changes in local conflict and security following the 2016 Peace Agreement have affected secondary students’ educational outcomes. Combining quantitative analysis of conflict and educational data with school-level fieldwork, it examines how changing security conditions shape educational experiences.
Together, the three studies explore how Colombia’s transitional processes can generate institutional, cultural, social and educational transformation, and how knowledge emerging from these processes can contribute to sustaining and deepening peace.
