Latest: Sussex academics propose alternative to the Galileo satellite navigation system

Professor Chris Chatwin of the University of Sussex and Dr Lasisi Lawal Salami from the Obasanjo Space Center in Nigeria (former University of Sussex PhD student) outline in a recent paper a programme to provide the United Kingdom with an alternative to Galileo.

Galileo is the European Union satellite navigation system. It provides an alternative to the US-controlled Global Positioning System (GPS). As the UK is programmed to leave the EU, it has withdrawn from participating in this programme. The researchers have proposed instead a Satellite-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) which would meet the UK’s needs in the transportations and defence sectors, as well as those of emergency services. Their proposal was published by the Journal of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and can be read in its entirety on the university's repository
