It’s almost time to open the doors! The first new student accommodation at West Slope is now officially complete and will be ready to welcome its first residents later this month. Last week, the University received the final building control sign-off and confirmation that the first phase of West Slope is practically complete. This means our Estates team can now get into the buildings and put the finishing touches in place before students arrive for the new academic year. 

And there’s plenty for the first residents to look forward to. 

Phase 1 includes 376 brand-new ensuite bedrooms across three buildings – Graffham House, Newick House and Saxby House. The rooms are arranged in flats of six to eight students, giving you your own ensuite bedroom alongside shared kitchen, dining and living spaces – the perfect setup for making friends and getting to know your new flatmates. 

Saxby House will also be home to the new West Slope accommodation reception, as well as laundry facilities and secure cycle storage. 

And this is just the beginning. 

Further accommodation will open in 2027 and 2028 and will offer a mix of room types, including shared-bathroom rooms, two-bedroom family flats and fully adaptable accommodation with carers’ facilities. 

When the whole West Slope development is complete, it will provide almost 2,000 new student bedspaces, as well as a supermarket and social spaces, creating a whole new neighbourhood on campus and giving more new and returning students the opportunity to live just minutes from their lectures, the Library, social spaces and all the other facilities Sussex has to offer.

Earlier this year, West Slope welcomed its first occupants when the new Health and Wellbeing Centre opened in Newick House. The purpose-built centre brings together University wellbeing services and the campus NHS GP practice, making it easier for students to access support when they need it. It includes new consultation and clinical spaces, as well as areas for therapy, workshops and group activities.

For the 376 students moving into West Slope this September, this is more than a brand-new room. It’s the beginning of a brand-new part of campus life.
