Professor Mike Okorie awarded prestigious National Teaching Fellowship

Mike Okorie, Professor of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics and Head, Department of Medical Education at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), has been awarded a prestigious National Teaching Fellowship from Advance HE, recognising his outstanding contribution to student learning and teaching in higher education.
Professor Okorie is one of a select group of higher education professionals from institutions across the UK to receive the award in 2026. The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme (NTFS) celebrates individuals who have made an exceptional impact on student outcomes and the teaching profession.
A highly respected educator and leader at BSMS, Professor Okorie has made a significant contribution to medical education through his commitment to excellence in teaching, curriculum development and student support. His work has helped shape the learning experience of students and has influenced educational practice within BSMS and across the wider higher education sector.

Professor Okorie said:

The award continues a strong track record of national recognition for teaching excellence across BSMS and its partner Universities of Sussex and Brighton. National Teaching Fellowships are among the most prestigious awards for learning and teaching in UK higher education and recognise educators who have demonstrated sustained impact both within their institutions and across the sector. The award celebrates excellence in higher education teaching and highlights the crucial role that educators play in transforming students' learning experiences.
The 2026 Awards Ceremony will take place on Thursday 24 September 2026 at Dynamic Earth, Edinburgh.
