Swimming safely in the sea in Brighton and Hove
Conditions in the sea can change rapidly and be deceptive. So it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and how the weather might impact your safety. In an emergency and you see someone enter the sea in dangerous circumstances, always call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
Lifeguards operate on Brighton Beach usually from the last week of May until the first weekend of September. Please check the Brighton and Hove website before swimming.
Things to consider:
- Assess hazards (including the tide, current etc) before entering the sea
- Tell people in advance of your swim
- Wear appropriate clothing
- Location – sea around piers and groynes can have unpredictable currents and depths
- Alcohol – alcohol can impair judgement and also put the body at higher risk of hypothermia
- Health conditions – speak to a doctor if you are concerned about whether sea-swimming is safe
