Just two years after construction began, we’re getting ready to open the doors of the University’s brand‑new Health and Wellbeing Centre, based in Newick House. It’s a big moment for campus – this will be the first West Slope building to open and will also be home to 66 new student flats.
The Centre officially opens in mid-May, marking an important step forward in how Sussex supports student wellbeing.
Wellbeing at the heart of campus
Your wellbeing matters, and this new Centre is all about making support easier to access. By bringing a wide range of services together in one place, the Centre will offer everything from relaxed wellbeing activities and community-focused support to more specialist therapeutic services.
If you’re looking for wellbeing support, your first stop will still be the Student Centre - this is where you can make enquiries, book appointments, and explore available support. Our integrated approach will ensure that you get the right help at the right time throughout your studies – whether that’s a space to talk, time to reset, or more structured support.
Bringing together student wellbeing and NHS healthcare
The new Health and Wellbeing Centre provides an opportunity for our Wellbeing services and our NHS GP practice to work more closely together and under the same roof. There will be a welcoming joint service reception on the ground floor, right next to our University mental health nurses, and NHS mental health practitioners, who will work alongside each other. The waiting area will also be the new home for our Wellbeing stall offering more relaxed wellbeing activities.
The campus NHS GP service will be based on the first floor, with dedicated consultation rooms and purpose‑built facilities, this represents a significant improvement in access to healthcare for both students and local residents. The new space will provide a calm and welcoming environment for patients to seek support and treatment. The GP service will continue not only to support students and staff, but also patients from the wider community.
An entire floor of the Centre will also be dedicated to University therapeutic services, providing quiet, comfortable, and confidential spaces for students to seek treatment from therapists, counsellors and psychological wellbeing practitioners. There will also be dedicated group rooms for NHS-run clinics, University psychoeducative workshops and group therapy.
Healthcare on campus
This integrated approach will ensure students can access the right support, at the right time, throughout their studies.
Overall, the new Health and Wellbeing Centre is about helping you feel supported, looked-after and able to make the most of your time at Sussex – both inside and outside the seminar room.
