Why should you do a Professional Placement Year, and what might you gain from it?
Oscar (Business and Management BSc) undertook a placement at market research organisation Kantar Worldpanel - and had an unforgettable year immersed in industry, building skills for the future. Now in his final year at Sussex, Oscar reflects on his experience - and shares valuable advice on why you should consider a placement, and how to set yourself apart in applications:
I applied to Kantar Worldpanel as I was intrigued by the company and what they do. Having researched Kantar I was aware that they had a prestigious reputation within the market research industry. There was no requirement of any previous experience, however researching and developing an understanding of what the organisation does definitely helped during the early interview stages. I was able to apply this knowledge in the interviews and improve my chances of progressing from the interview stages.
The placement year within the Worldpanel division of Kantar consisted of being a part of the client delivery team, being the first point of contact for clients and client service for all requests or questions. There are many things I enjoyed about my placement year. I enjoyed being in a diverse team, where everyone was working together, and supporting each other. I enjoyed meeting people in the company, especially my fellow placement students who had come from various different universities and were in the same position as I was.
During my placement year I enhanced my Excel skills, enabling me to analyse data more efficiently and accurately. My communication skills improved, and I developed strong time management abilities, juggling multiple tasks and meeting deadlines consistently. Additionally, the role taught me responsibility, as I learned to take ownership of tasks and deliver quality results. These skills will empower me to excel in future professional challenges, contributing confidently to data-driven decisions and fostering productive teamwork.
Balancing multiple projects and meeting deadlines taught me to stay organized and focused under pressure. Additionally, I recognized the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Immersing myself in a professional environment helped me understand how crucial it is to set boundaries and recharge outside of work. These lessons have equipped me with valuable skills that will support both my personal and professional growth moving forward.
Taking part in a placement year offers numerous advantages. You'll have the opportunity to meet new people, including industry professionals and fellow placement students, expanding your network. You'll also work alongside industry professionals and other placement students, fostering collaboration and networking. It'san exciting chance to immerse yourself in a professional environment and grow in ways that will benefityou long-term.
Show genuine passion during the interview process—be curious and engaged. Take the time to research the organisation'svalues, recent projects, and market presence; understanding the company will set you apart. Craft a well-thought-out cover letter tailored to the role, highlighting your skills and interests.
