Managing RAAC on Campus – Arts A RAAC improvement work has started

Last updated: Thursday, 15 January 2026
In 2022, the use of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) was identified in several University buildings.
The safety of our students, staff and visitors remains our top priority. Where RAAC has been identified, appropriate safety measures – such as scaffolding props – are in place as a precaution, and the condition of the material continues to be closely monitored by specialist engineers. All affected buildings remain open and safe to use, with local access restrictions in place where required.
What have we done so far?
The location, extent and condition of RAAC varies from building to building. Wherever possible, RAAC replacement and remediation works are being aligned with existing campus improvement projects, allowing us to deliver the most effective long-term solutions. Since 2024, we have:
- Completed RAAC replacement works on Bramber House roof.
- Reinforced RAAC ceiling panels in Grade I Listed Mandela Hall, Falmer House.
- Reinforced a small amount of RAAC in Eat Central during its refurbishment.
Arts A: improvement works now underway
The next phase of improvement works is now underway in Arts A, a Grade II* Listed building where RAAC was used in the original floor construction of a small number of offices. Following planning permission and Listed Building Consent secured last year, the project includes:
- Replacing a small area of floor RAAC panels.
- External weatherproofing repairs to brickwork and a balcony to prevent future water damage.
A small number of offices will be closed while works are underway. All works expected to be completed in spring 2026.
RAAC impacted buildings – current status
- Arts A: Although the majority of RAAC in Arts A is assessed as being in good condition and will continue to be monitored, replacement works are underway for a small section of damaged floor panels.
- Arundel: Safety measures remain effective and continue to be monitored regularly. The building is open and safe to use.
- Bramber House: Roof replacement works have been successfully completed and a small amount of RAAC was reinforced during Eat Central’s refurbishment.
- Chichester I: Safety measures remain effective and continue to be monitored regularly. The building is open and safe to use.
- Chichester II: Safety measures remain effective and continue to be monitored regularly. The building is open and safe to use.
- Falmer House: Reinforcement works to RAAC panels in Mandela Hall were completed in September 2024 and Ivon Hitchens’ mural, Day’s Rest, Days’ Work, which was removed during the works and displayed at Towner Eastbourne, was reinstated in December 2025.
- JMS: Safety measures remain effective and continue to be monitored regularly. The building is open and safe to use.
