The Institute of Development Studies (IDS), a key partner of the University of Sussex, based on our campus, has announced the appointment of its new Director, Professor Anuradha Joshi. Professor Joshi takes over from interim Director Professor Peter Taylor and will lead the organisation as it approaches its 60th anniversary in 2026.
The University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sasha Roseneil, said: “My warmest congratulations go to Professor Joshi on her appointment. Sussex’s partnership with the Institute of Development Studies is a crucial one, underlined by our joint ranking as first in the world for Development Studies in the QS World University Rankings by Subject for nine consecutive years. As a member of the IDS Board, I am keenly aware that the global challenges that IDS is at the forefront of addressing are more pressing now than ever, and the political and funding environment particularly difficult, and I wish the Institute well under Anu’s leadership.”
Prior to this appointment Professor Joshi was Director of Research at IDS, where she led the research work of the institute as well as shaping organisational strategy. Her research focuses on citizen-state relations, accountability, and public service delivery, and she serves on various international bodies including the UN Committee of Experts on Public Administration. Her research has significantly influenced governance reforms and public institutions in South Asia and beyond, with collaborative projects spanning Brazil, Ghana, Indonesia, Mozambique, and Vietnam. Professor Joshi started her new role on 1 January 2026.
