Introduced in autumn 2022 as part of the University’s response to the cost-of-living crisis, the Sussex Saver meal was created to give our campus community access to a hot, nutritious, and low-cost plant-based meal. Since launch, an impressive 186,988 plant-based Sussex Saver meals have been sold.
Foodsteps’ carbon-labelling data shows that the most popular plant-based option – the Rajasthan Red Lentil Curry – emits just 0.20kg CO₂e per serving, compared with 1.31kg CO₂e for the second-most-popular dish at Eat Central, Chicken Curry. This means the Sussex Saver has helped avoid an estimated 1.11kg CO₂e per serving – adding up to 207,557kg CO₂e saved overall.
Regrettably, after three and a half years of holding the price steady, we now have to increase the price of the Sussex Saver meal. From January 2026, the plant-based Sussex Saver will be priced at £2.50. This change reflects rising food and wage costs over recent years, whilst ensuring Sussex Uni Food can continue to offer good-value, responsibly sourced, and healthy meals for our community.
The Sussex Saver will remain customisable. Alongside the core £2.50 plant-based option, you’ll still be able to add in extras such as brown rice, seasonal sides or meat additions.
