Kindness Week: small actions with a big impact
By: Jessica Otterwell
Last updated: Monday, 3 November 2025
From Monday 10 to Friday 14 November, the Student Experience and Engagement team (SEE) invites you to take part in Kindness Week, a campus-wide initiative celebrating connection, compassion and community. Whether you are donating a warm pair of socks or writing a card to brighten someone’s day, every act of kindness helps build a more supportive student experience.
Give Thoughtfully: Support Young Refugees
Throughout the week, donation tables will be available in the Student Centre to support the Hummingbird Project, a Brighton-based charity providing care packages for young refugees. You can contribute by donating small, specific items — all of which will be packed and distributed locally.
Accepted donations include:
- Food items: dried fruit or seeds, chocolate, cereal bars
- Unopened self-care products: soap, moisturiser, shampoo
- New warm clothing: winter hats, gloves (medium or large), socks (size 7+)
- Small gifts or games: notebooks, pens/pencils, packs of cards, Uno, Connect 4, Jenga
Please note that only listed items will be accepted.
Write for a Cause: Drop-In Letter Writing
Join us in the Student Centre Atrium for two drop-in letter writing sessions:
- Tuesday 11 November, 11am to 1pm
- Wednesday 13 November, 12pm to 2pm
You can choose to write a letter as part of Amnesty International’s Write for Rights campaign, supporting political prisoners around the world. Alternatively, write a card to another Sussex student — a simple way to share encouragement and brighten someone’s winter break.
Why It Matters
Kindness Week is about making space for care and connection in everyday life. Whether you stop by for five minutes or get involved all week, your contribution helps create a more inclusive and supportive campus community.
Find out more and get involved at the Student Centre from 10 to 14 November.
One kind act can spark another, so keep an eye out for some free hot drink giveaways courtesy of the Spirit of Sussex Award.
