Representatives from Falmer Parish Council on their tour of the East Slope show flat.
The University welcomed representatives from Falmer Parish Council this week who came to view the East Slope show flat and multi-storey car park.
With construction of new student residences taking place close to Falmer village, the visit was arranged by the University to give some of its nearest neighbours an opportunity to learn more about the new development on the east side of the campus.
Melanie Cutress, Chair of Falmer Parish Council, was impressed by the clever layout of the development, which scales sympathetically across the sloped landscape of the site, with taller blocks at the bottom of the hill and lower-rise units at the top. She was also interested to hear about the different features of the new student accommodation.
Melanie commented: “The innovations that are designed in to these new buildings are remarkable. It's impressive that even greywater is collected and recycled in the toilet flushing system, and everything from laundry to energy usage can be monitored by the residents using an app. Student housing has certainly come a long way!”
More than 1,500 additional bedrooms will be built in the new development, with the first flats available for students at the start of the 2018/19 academic year. The development is due to be completed in 2020.
The visitors also took a ‘sneak peek’ inside the new Jubilee car park ahead of its planned opening next week. They were pleased to see the considerable efforts the University is making to ensure that maximum car parking capacity is maintained.
John Burt, Vice-chair of Falmer Parish Council, commented: “It is good to see the investment Sussex is making to help alleviate some of the pressure on parking and transport.”
The Jubilee car park is due to open on Tuesday 29 May and will deliver nearly 350 parking spaces. It will also house eight motorcycle bays with anchor security points, as well as nine charging points for electric vehicles.
