Tara Haden (centre) was named Inspirational Student of the Year at the 2018 BMEc Awards
Tara Haden, a final year Business and Management Studies BSc student, has won £150 after taking second prize in the second annual Responsible Business and Management Writing Competition, organised by the PRME Chapter UK and Ireland.
The competition, aimed at promoting understanding of the United Nations Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), challenged students across the UK and Ireland to submit an original piece of writing on a topic related to responsible business, management and leadership.
Entries were judged by a panel of academics from a range of PRME signatory business schools and assessed by the following criteria:
- evidence of insight and intellectual challenge
- evidence of engagement and student voice
- quality of research
- structure, logic and clarity of style.
Tara, who is also President of the Sussex Business Society, was thrilled at being recognised for her essay exploring the solutions social impact agents provide to the destructive nature of the profit maximising corporation:
“Studying business, and seeing the effects that corporations can have on society, made me question the true role of a business. I wanted to develop a more critical understanding and see if there was a way forward in progressing corporations’ sustainable impact; one way to do this is by changing the role of management to embed sustainability into their performance measures.
“Sustainable, responsible management fascinates me and the piece was submitted to the competition without any expectations. I am very pleased with this achievement and grateful for the opportunities offered by PRME. I hope to continue exploring sustainability in business after my degree.”
Isabel Fischer, Tara’s lecturer for Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Ethics and Director of Internationalisation for the School of Business, Management and Economics, commented: “Our UN Global Compact and PRME memberships underpin many of our School’s global sustainability and social engagement initiatives. I was delighted to hear that Tara participated in this year’s PRME writing competition and won second prize. Tara – congratulations!”
