The Head of Engineering and Design at the University of Sussex will speak in Brussels tomorrow (Friday 24 November) about how the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G and artificial intelligence (AI) will change Europe.
Professor Maziar Nekovee, an expert in 5G who joined Sussex from Samsung this year, will present alongside EU policymakers, academics, business leaders and others at the high-profile event organised by telecoms giant Huawei.
He will discuss ways in which we can harness for the greater good this highly potent mix of three emerging technologies.
Professor Nekovee said: “With the advent of 5G services in 2020, the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence will develop faster still, potentially delivering widespread socio-economic benefits in the UK and beyond.
“At the same time, how to use AI and big-data analytics to manage the ever more complex telecoms operators’ networks is a focus of our ongoing research at Sussex.
“This is a very important question because, by 2025, operators’ 5G networks need to support connectivity for an estimated 50 billion IoT devices - an order of magnitude larger number of subscribers than today.”
Other speakers at the event include Dr Walter Wigel, Vice President of Huawei’s European Research Institute, Paul Rübig, Member of the European Parliament, Patrick Child, Deputy Director-General for Research and Innovation at the European Commission, Lieve Declercq, Vice-President of Estée Lauder Companies, and a number of other prominent academics from across Europe.
