Department of Philosophy

Postgraduate study

  • Philosophy at Sussex is ranked in the top 10 in the UK in The Sunday Times University Guide 2012 and in the top 20 in the UK in The Complete University Guide 2010-11 and The Guardian University Guide 2011.
  • Philosophy at Sussex achieved a strong result in the 2008 Research Assessment exercise (RAE), placing it 18th in the subject nationally. It is one of only nine philosophy departments in the UK to have 100 per cent of its research activity rated as world leading, internationally excellent or internationally recognised.

Each one of our postgraduate degrees is oriented towards a different level of philosophical development. You will be encouraged to develop skills that philosophy is especially good at fostering – skills of critical reading, analysis and presentation of arguments, and the ability to recognise and question fundamental assumptions. Each postgraduate degree can be taken for its own sake, as a basis for further study, or for the transferable skills with which it equips you.

We encourage our postgraduate students to attend the weekly meetings of the Philosophy Society. Postgraduate students also organise their own reading groups and form a lively philosophical community in their own right.
