Department of Sociology

Research degrees and how to apply

Research in Sociology at Sussex draws on our long-standing tradition in both social and political theory and rigorous empirical research in the UK, Europe and North America. We have a world-class reputation for research on inequality, health and medicine, globalization and identity. The Department offers a vibrant and productive environment in which to conduct and present postgraduate research at both Masters and DPhil level.

The Sociology Department at Sussex is home to researchers working across a variety of cutting-edge themes, including citizenship, cosmopolitanism, globalisation, race and racism, multiculturalism, nation and identity, gender relations, sexual violence, inequalities, labour markets and employment, health, the pharmaceutical industry, genetic testing, mental illness, pain, shyness and healthcare policy.

We welcome applications from students interested in undertaking doctoral studies in most areas of sociology. We are especially interested in receiving applications on topics that fall within the Department’s three research clusters: gender and inequality; health, medicine and science; and social theory and political sociology. In addition to these areas, our faculty has expertise in many other topics within social science. Interdisciplinary projects are strongly encouraged.

The Department also offers an MSc in Cross-Cultural Research Methods. This programme is designed to provide a foundation in research methods for social scientists. Students planning on undertaking doctoral research and who do not have a Masters degree are strongly encouraged to consider taking this degree programme. The MSc can be taken as part of a 1+3 framework, leading directly on to doctoral research.

Please note: a DPhil is the term given by the University of Sussex to the award of Doctor of Philosophy by research, often referred to by other universities as a PhD.

For details on the application process please refer to the Applying pages of the postgraduate prospectus.
