The role of the Centre
The Law School at the University of Sussex formally launched its Centre for Responsibilities, Rights and the Law at an international, interdisciplinary conference on Gender, Family Responsibility and Legal Change held at Sussex in July 2008. The launch took the form of a keynote lecture delivered by Baroness Hale. In her lecture Baroness Hale reflected upon her work in the area of gender and family law and identified aspects of the law that were still in need of reform.
The lecture marked the beginnings of the activities of the Centre for Responsibilities, Rights and the Law. The Centre aims to facilitate and develop doctrinal, theoretical and empirical research into responsibilities, rights and the law nationally, in the European Union and internationally. It brings together research into responsibilities and rights cutting across the key areas of research within the Sussex Law School (citizenship and constitutionalism, solidarity, security, governance and human rights) and operates through a programme of conferences, lectures, workshops, seminars and funded research projects.
