Borrowing and returning loans

To borrow or return items, use the self service units on the ground floor.

When returning items, don’t forget to put them through one at a time and check your receipt. When the Library is closed you can use the overnight book drop, at the north end of the building, next to the wheelchair-accessible door.

If you wish to return items by post please use the address below. Please send items by recorded delivery as proof of posting will not be accepted as proof of delivery (you may be invoiced for replacements if the items you've posted are lost).

The Library sends an automated reminder email 2 days before an item is due.  These are courtesy emails only and do not mitigate your responsibility to return or renew on time. Fines will not be waived on the basis of not receiving a reminder. Reminders cannot be sent for Core items.

Core Collection Loans

Core collection items are a required material for a number of University of Sussex courses. To ensure that everyone has a chance to access them, core collection loan periods are therefore very short, fines for not returning items on time are potentially very expensive and core collection items may not be renewed online or by phone. Please take careful note of the return date on your receipt when you borrow a core collection item. The table above shows usual core collection loan periods.

Reservations and bookings

Short Loan, Audiovisual, Documents and Long Loan

If all the copies of an item you require are on loan you may place a reservation by clicking the Request button on the library catalogue page. When a copy is returned we will send you an email and place the item on the Reservations shelf for you. Reserved items are filed in shelfmark order together with a 4 digit pin code that matches the last 4 digits of your borrower number. The email you receive will tell you how to collect your item.

Please note, you cannot make a reservation for a specific loan type e.g Long Loan rather than Short Loan. The reservation is filled by the item returned soonest.

Reserved items are located on the first shelf as you enter the Core collection.

Renewals

Short Loan, Audiovisual, Documents and Long Loan

You can renew your Loans by using the My Account / Renewals section of our website, at the self issue units, by telephone (01273 678487) or in person at the Information Hub.

Please note that you will be unable to renew your loans if the item has been reserved, recalled or if your account is blocked due to a fine or overdue item. Accounts become blocked when an item is 7 days overdue, fines exceed £10 or are over 28 days old.

Overdue loans

Be aware that if items are 3 weeks overdue, an invoice will be raised for the replacement cost plus a non-refundable processing charge of £17.50 per item.

We understand that sometimes you may incur fines because of personal circumstances. Please read the Library support service pages for advice.
