What is Occupational Health?

The Occupational Health Service offers advice on health, safety and well-being at work. The service works to:

  • prevent work related ill health
  • reduce risks to health from occupational hazards
  • promote health and safety

What Occupational Health Services are there?

The service covers a wide range of activities including:

  • pre-employment health screening
  • assessment of fitness to work after an illness or injury
  • management and self referrals; advice to staff and managers regarding sickness, absence or serious illness
  • regular health surveillance checks or medicals depending on the nature of work carried out
  • work related vaccinations
  • referrals for counselling
  • health promotion
  • training

Who are the Occupational Health Team?

The Occupational Health service is provided by an independent professional organisation called the Robens Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. They are contracted to the University to offer advice and support on work-related health issues. Individual occupational health records or reports are confidential and staff have access to any information kept under the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Access to Medical Reports Act 1988.

The team consists of qualified nurses and a sessional doctor, who have specialised in Occupational Health. Alison James - Senior Occupational Health Adviser, Karolina Michalak – Occupational Health Administration, Dr Honor Abaecheta – Occupational Health Physician.

How do I contact the Occupational Health Team?

Managers who would like to refer an employee to Occupational Health will need to make the referral via the Management Referrals online portal. The manager guide provides new users the necessary information to create a profile which will enable managers to refer employees to Occupational Health as well as then being able to view the report which Occupational Health provide.
