1. Don't be pushed
- there is generally a good supply of housing.
- search from January for properties for the next academic year.
- think carefully about who you want to live with.
2. View several properties
- to make an informed decision: useful resources here.
3. Read over your tenancy agreement
- before you sign. Visit the University Housing Office who can read through it with you.
- most tenancy agreements are 'joint and several' which means that if one person in your group does not pay the rent, the Landlord could pursue the remaining group for the rent.
4. Only pay money
- after you have viewed the property, signed the tenancy agreement and always obtain a receipt when you do.
- never transfer funds from overseas before viewing a property or signing a tenancy agreement.
5. You are not on your own
- free help from the University Housing Office and the Sussex Students' Union (SSU) Advice & Representation Centre
- participate in our annual Housing Talk workshops, Housing Fair and visit the Housing Office to chat with the team.
- join Sussex University House Hunt on Facebook to meet other Sussex students to search together, receive advert's from Sussex students for spare rooms, and message the Housing Office team with questions and for advice.
- email us whenever you need to: housing@sussex.ac.uk
