Residential Services is part of the University's Residential, Sport and Trading Services Division - 3 elements:
1. The Housing Service:
- Committed to improving the experience of living with US and in the private sector, we work in partnership and in collaboration with a number of internal and external services to make the best use of our resources. We contribute to the strategic direction of housing at Sussex (policy, planning, forecasting, and numbers on and off campus): annually allocates housing for 4,650 undergraduates, postgraduates, visitors, families, staff, Residential Advisors, returning students on health grounds, manages tenancies, fees, collects rent, handles enquiries, helps students in housing crisis (e.g homeless), arranges swaps and transfers, provides private sector advice, manages legal work and court action, and manages a property portfolio of 70 houses (for 305 Sussex residents) head-leased to the University along with 450 Homestay places dotted throughout the city.
- Over the Summer, we also welcome an additional 3,000 Sussex Students, summer schools, academic and other visitors into our residences and throughout the year work with internal and external colleagues, education providers and Agents to tailor our offer to specific needs.
- We manage a database of several thousand private sector properties for our students, check gas, electrical and other certificates and complete property inspections. Upon request, we provide references for thousands of students to Landlords and Letting Agents. Property owners sign up to our Code of Standards which helps us raise standards and shape average rent prices in the city. We work in partnership with Brighton University and the City Council to share intelligence, develop strategies, and coordinate resources.
- We interact with at least 4,650 applicants and residents via social media daily, meet students on a 121 basis to help resolve housing issues and provide housing and broad advice (for example by reading over private sector tenancy agreements before our students pay any money or commit, in the context of housing law), signpost to support services, deliver events to help our students search for private sector housing, attend Community Forums in the locality, offer housing tours and present at open days.
- Manages our eight residential buildings, house-keeping, portering and operations.
- Administers our network of over one hundred Residential Advisors (students) who live in our residences. The Residential Student Support Manager lives in University housing off-campus, and the Residential Student Support Officer lives in University housing on-campus.
