University Amateur Radio Society G4AQG BBQ

Friday 22 June 18:00 until 21:00
Near Falmer Sports Pavilion, adjacent to Ridge Road entrance

The University Amateur Radio Society G4AQG is holding a Summer Barbecue at the club station which is situated near to the Sports Pavilion, on Friday 22nd June from 6pm. We’re celebrating 12 years since we re-built the station in January 2006 and more than 40 years since it was first established.

We have a Yaesu FT-1000MP and linear amplifier available for use by licensed amateurs, and a small workshop with a good collection of test gear to aid construction of equipment.

The station now has very good antennas well suited to global communications: a Yagi antenna for 20/15/10m on a 60 ft tower, a 160m doublet, dipoles for 40m, 30m and 17m, an 85ft high Inverted L and a 1/4 wave vertical for 80m.

A local farmer has allowed us to install very long receiving aerials (Beverages) so that we can listen to very weak signals from around the world.

There are a few other University Amateur Radio stations but we think that Sussex has by far the best facilities. We’ve used the station in competitions, and have won the “CQ World Wide 160m DX contest” for England almost every year.

We want to enable more staff and students to use the station and enjoy Amateur Radio, and are setting up Foundation and Intermediate training courses from this autumn.

Anyone interested in any aspect of amateur radio, from HF contests and the ancient art of Morse code to digital communication and satelllites is very welcome. You don’t need a licence, just an interest, as the existing ‘hams’ are always prepared to help others get involved.

All welcome, staff and students, alumni, Sussex-ex, local amateurs.

Please RSVP to g4aqg@sussex.ac.uk or contact Jeremy Maris (ITS) or Peter Reed (Life Sciences)
