The School of Media, Film and Music at Sussex has established strong links with Brighton's flourishing digital and creative industries and communities. The skills that you will acquire whilst studying at Sussex, combined with the proximity and access to leading companies and organisations in the sector present our students with excellent opportunities for work experience, placements and future career prospects.

Please find below an A-Z list of some of the organisations in Brighton and the wider region with which we have established excellent relationships. We work in partnership with many of these organisations to collaborate on production, exhibitions, research and education. Many of our academic faculty are actively involved with these organisations and many of our students are able to benefit from these relationships through work experience and placement opportunities and from the range and diversity of guest speakers that visit the School to address our students.

ADAY.orgOn May 15 2012, Aday.org asked people around the world to take a photograph of their daily life. Bringing together thousands of both amateur and professional photographers, with over 100,000 images from more than165 countries, their aim was to use the power of photography to create, share and inspire perspectives on daily life.

These images formed the largest ever global photography exhibition ‘A Day in the World’, staged simultaneously in over 22 countries, with an estimated worldwide audience of 46 million. Since then, 1,000 of these images have been chosen for a coffee table book by the same name.

Senior Lecturer Melanie Friend was a ‘Connector’ for this Swedish based international project, linking students taking photography modules to the ADAY.org organizers and encouraging students to submit their images to the project.


The Argus newspaperThe Argus is a local newspaper based in Brighton and Hove. Founded as the Evening Argus in 1880, its editions continue to serve the city of Brighton and Hove along with other areas of Sussex.

The Argus covers all aspects of life in Brighton and Hove, including news, business, sport, entertainment, jobs, homes, events, reader offers and much more.

Their aim is to make brilliant television. Around since 2000, they offer comprehensive, high-end audio and video post-production facilities, available with or without their experienced crew.

Since 2009, students from our MA in Digital Documentary have undertaken internships with back2back Productions. This kind of practical experience provides our students with the relevant skills needed to work within the broadcast industries and helps them to stand out from the crowd when job-hunting.


The Basement logoLocated in the heart of Brighton, The Basement is a leading purveyor of innovative and experimental performance. Presenting a programme of leading national and international artists alongside the Brighton’s most exciting experimental performers.

The Basement supports a thriving community of supported and associated artists who develop and present new work in the venue. With a range of unusual performance spaces they offer unique performance possibilities for artists and audiences.

Brighton Chamber of Commerce logoThe Brighton and Hove Chamber of Commerce is a business network with a diverse membership including artists, writers, digital media talent, service organisations and professionals in law and finance.

The Chamber is the voice of the city’s business people, representing their members politically and economically. They work closely with local agencies on issues like business legislation, whilst providing networking opportunities and delivering advice and training.

Brighton Digital Festival logoBrighton Digital Festival is a month-long celebration of all things digital, bringing together the city’s vibrant arts and digital communities. From small-scale meet ups to big name conferences, from digital artists’ experimental ideas to fully mounted exhibitions, the Festival promises something for everybody and because most events are free, plenty of opportunities to discover something new.

Brighton Festival logoBrighton Festival is an annual three week Festival which takes place in May. Originally started in 1967, it is now the largest arts festival in England and one of the major milestones in the international cultural calendar.

Brighton Festival has a long tradition for attracting the most exciting performers from across the globe, as well as promoting local artists, and bringing fresh, challenging new work to Brighton.

Brighton Fringe Festival logoBrighton Fringe started as an extension to the Brighton Festival’s curated programme in 1967 and worked as a showcase for local artists, performers and promoters. The Fringe grew so considerably that it became a company and festival in its own right in 2006.

Brighton Fringe is now the third largest open-access, multi-art form festival in the world. Brighton and Hove is the ideal location for the Fringe Festival, given the city’s unique heritage of liberalism and creativity.

Brighton FuseBrighton Fuse is a research and development project which aims to analyse the growth of Brighton’s successful creative, digital and information technology cluster, whilst promoting further innovation and economic development.

The project is run by Wired Sussex, the University of Sussex, the University of Brighton and the Council of Industry & Higher Education. Brighton Fuse is funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council.

The University of Sussex is a delivery partner of the Brighton Fuse project.


BIMM logoBIMM is a music college that offers fully accredited, intensive music courses for individuals who are committed to a career in music or the music industry. They offer a range of music degrees and diplomas as well as music teacher training courses for Higher and Further Education.

Brighton was selected as the base for the college because of the vibrant music and arts scene, along with the availability of gigs, studios, record labels and artists.

A Brighton Journalist Works Student

Brighton Journalist Works is an independent journalism training company which offers courses that are accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ). NCTJ accreditation means you are ready to become a journalist and hit the ground running from day one. The NCTJ qualification is recognised by editors and publishers all over the world.

Brighton Journalist Works offer unique multimedia training which takes place in the offices of The Argus.

A Media Centre studio

The Brighton Media Centre is open to professional artists, students, graduates and corporate clients from the design/creative industries in Brighton. Brighton is a location of excellence for all forms of media practice and the Media Centre has helped to facilitate the growth of this industry by offering facilities, networking events, exhibitions, electronic networks, business support and information services for the sector.

Brighton Media Centre offer flexible performance spaces, an exhibition gallery, a photographic studio, a film studio, a sound studio and a secret garden venue.

Brighton OurstoryBrighton Ourstory was set up in 1989 in order to preserve lesbian, gay and bisexual history. They work to collect material about the lesbian, gay and bisexual past - and present - and to make sure that their experience is preserved and made visible to the LGBT community.

Brighton Ourstory produce exhibitions, publications and performances based on these objectives and are working towards establishing a history archive in their own premises.

Visitors to the Photo FringeBrighton Photo Fringe was founded in 2003 in partnership with Brighton Photo Biennial (BpB), which began the same year. The Fringe was devised for local artists to become involved with the international festival, BpB. The Fringe has since grown into an all-encompassing festival, attracting 144,000 visitors in 2010.

The Fringe is open to all, which makes it distinct from any other photography or lens based festival presently working in the UK.

BBC logoThe BBC is the world's leading public service broadcaster. Its mission is to enrich people's lives with programmes that inform, educate and entertain. Established by a Royal Charter, the BBC is a public service broadcaster funded by the licence fee paid by UK households.

The BBC use the income from the licence fee to provide services including 10 national TV channels plus regional programming, 10 national radio stations, 40 local radio stations and an extensive website.

Marcus Ryder, the Head of Current Affairs at BBC Scotland is an Honourary Senior Lecturer and contributes to our journalism courses.

Andy O’Dwyer from the BBC Research and Development Department will be delivering a talk as part of our MA Masterclass series, open to all of our MFM Masters students. 


British Film Institute logoThe BFI is the lead organisation for film in the UK. Since 1933 they’ve cared for the BFI National Archive, and celebrated the best of British and international filmmaking through festivals, film restoration, DVD releases and cinema programming.

The BFI combine cultural, creative and industrial roles, film distribution and exhibition, publishing and festivals. They also award Lottery funding to film production, distribution, education, audience development and market intelligence and research.

Channel 4 logoChannel 4 is a publicly-owned, commercially-funded public service broadcaster, with a remit to be innovative, experimental and distinctive.

In addition to the main Channel 4 service, their portfolio includes E4, More4, Film4 and 4Music, and a range of online activities that includes the video-on-demand service 4oD. Through Film4 Channel 4 is also a key supporter of British film making talent. As a publisher-broadcaster, Channel 4 is required to commission UK content from the independent production sector. They are a major investor in the UK's creative economy, working with around 300 creative companies every year and investing significantly in training and talent development throughout the industry.

CINECITY screeningCINECITY is a film and moving image agency which provides a year-round programme of events, screenings and exhibitions, and hosts the annual CINECITY Brighton Film Festival.

The festival includes the very best in international cinema, a global mix of premieres and previews, artists’ cinema and installations, treasures from the archive, retrospectives, free education screenings and events, talks and debates.

CoMA orchestraCoMA (Contemporary Music for All) is dedicated to enabling amateur musicians to become involved in contemporary music and works in partnership with professional musicians in order to bring new music to wider audiences.

CoMA Sussex have performed at events such as Soundwaves Festival and Brighton Live, and regularly hold workshops, give concerts and take part in musical collaborations. As well as CoMA commissions and Open Score pieces, they perform music composed by their own members, and other new and experimental music.

Culture 24 logoCulture24 is a non-profit, cultural publishing organization, which supports arts and heritage venues in reaching audiences across digital platforms. They work on collecting, curating and distributing content about museums, galleries and other cultural institutions, publishing websites, and leading action research projects.

Culture24 provides a digital platform for cultural organisations of all sizes, promoting their activities and content to a wider audience. They also run the national Museums at Night campaign.

DAM PR logoDAM PR is a public relations consultancy based in Brighton. They work to raise their clients' profiles across the media - including print, online, broadcast and social networks, on an international, national, regional and local scale.

DAM PR was created by David Andrews, a former national newspaper financial writer/editor, specializing in consumer/corporate finance.

Duke of York'sThe Duke of York’s opened on 22nd September 1910 and is the UK’s oldest purpose-built cinema, as verified by the Cinema Theatres  Association. It has continually operated as a cinema throughout its lifetime and is recognized as one of the country’s most important independent cinemas.

Over its one hundred years The Duke of York’s has gone from Edwardian Picture Palace to ‘flea-pit’ to leading independent cinema going through many stages that reflect the changing nature of cinema exhibition in this country.

Fabrica internal spaceFabrica is a visual arts organization based in a former Regency church in the heart of Brighton. Fabrica commissions contemporary visual art installations specific to the building.

This contemporary art gallery hosts exhibitions, education programmes, talks, workshops and events.

Feminist Review Trust logoThe Feminist Review Trust is a grant-giving body, which exists to fund research and other scholarly activity on all aspects of gender. The Trust invites applications for its research grants and supports feminist scholars and activities.

FotoDocument logo FotoDocument’s mission is to provide an international public platform for documentary photography. Focusing on social, cultural and environmental issues on a global scale, they believe world-class photography can be a powerful communication tool.

FotoDocument Fringe is a project open to amateur and professional photographers of all ages, from all over the world. Working in partnership with the Brighton Photo Fringe, they recently curated photo essays on positive environmental global initiatives at Brighton Railway Station.

As part of the third year of the Media and Film Studies course and the MA in Journalism and Media Studies, students have undertaken projects to create images for entry into the FotoDocument Fringe. Senior Lecturer and photographer Melanie Friend has also been a judge for the FotoDocument Fringe.


FACT auditoriumBased in Liverpool, FACT is one of the UK's leading media art centres. The FACT building houses three galleries and four cinema screens, showing the best in independent and mainstream film. FACT also runs its own film programmes, focusing on classic and art house.

Since the organisation was founded in 1988, they have commissioned and presented over 250 new media and digital artworks from artists. FACT’s Research team works with partners across the creative industries, health, high education and arts sectors to develop innovative projects.

A Glyndebourne/Sussex collaborationGlyndebourne opera house was founded in 1934 by John Christie and his opera singer wife, Audrey Mildmay. Glyndebourne is committed to presenting opera of the highest quality, commissioning new work, developing new talent and reaching new audiences.

The Glyndebourne Festival presents six productions each year in a 1,200-seat opera house. Glyndebourne on Tour, founded in 1968, takes three productions around the UK each autumn. Together, Festival and Tour present about 120 performances a year to an audience of around 150,000.

The Music Department’s partnership with Glyndebourne has, over a number of years, resulted in visits by students to performances, workshops and masterclasses, pre-concert talks by Music Department researchers at Glyndebourne, and collaborative projects involving both students and staff.


The Great Escape FestivalFounded in 2006, The Great Escape is a leading event for showcasing new music. Kick-starting the festival season annually, The Great Escape takes place in Brighton over 3 days in May.

The festival introduces 16,000 music lovers to the key artists and sounds of the year, with over 300 bands playing in 30 venues over 3 days. The Alternative Escape, numerous club nights, label parties, industry showcases, unique collaborations and outdoor gigs all add to the festivities.

Lee Miller Archives logoLee Miller produced some of the most powerful photographs seen this century, from portraits of her friends such as Pablo Picasso, to her work as a correspondent with the US army in World War II.

The Lee Miller Archives is a small privately run archive which is dedicated to conserving and publishing the work of Lee Miller. The archive holding includes some 60,000 negatives, mainly black and white, most of her manuscripts, captions, notes letters and ephemeral material, her cameras, and some of her personal effects such as her US Army uniform.

A Lighthouse screeningLighthouse is a digital culture agency which supports, commissions and exhibits work by artists and filmmakers. Working with digital art and moving image, they provide a platform for digital artists and creators to demonstrate that digital culture is about more than technology and tools; it is about ideas, emotion, learning, and aesthetics.

Lighthouse also runs the UK’s leading mentoring programme for filmmakers – Guiding Lights – which supports rising film talent by connecting them with some of the industry’s greatest names.

Makemedia logoMakemedia is a digital media agency which specialises in developing digital media strategies and innovative projects.

Makemedia define, design and develop websites, web applications and engaging digital content.

Laura Evans, the Marketing Manager at Makemedia, is a graduate of our MA in Digital Media. Laura is a regular speaker on our courses.

Our postgraduate students have undertaken work placements at Makemedia, which has helped to develop their industry skills whilst providing them with relevant professional experience.


Miranda BirchMiranda Birch has 24 years of journalistic experience at the BBC and is now working independently with companies, charities and business coaches on content delivery.

Miranda Birch Media services include copywriting for websites, social media, publicity material and articles, and facilitation with generating ideas for website content and media coverage.

Pier ProductionsPier Productions was established in 1993 and is a major supplier of both factual and drama programmes to BBC Radio.

Award-winning BBC Radio drama producer David Blount from Pier Productions is a regular speaker for both the year 2 and year 3 sound/radio practice modules on our undergraduate degree courses.


Podium logoPodium is a new concept of communication, a platform for the under 20s to express and share their views through free daily podcasts.

An emerging social enterprise, Podium aims to empower young people, give them a voice and create work experience opportunities in broadcasting.

Podium is currently working with some of our second year sound/radio practice students to develop podcast material for the 13 to 19 year-old market. The relationship between Sussex and Podium looks set to grow and continue for some time.


Pride logoBrighton Pride is over twenty years old and one of the biggest festivals of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) culture in the UK. Taking place in August of each year, Pride is one of the main events in the city’s calendar and attracts tens of thousands of visitors.

The focus of Pride is to promote equality and diversity, eliminate discrimination and celebrate the LGBT community.

See FestivalSee Festival is a weeklong celebration of international documentaries hosted annually in Brighton.

Since 2005 the festival has been attracting celebrated filmmakers such as Louis Theroux, Nick Broomfield and Luke Holland. The festival includes a diverse selection of film Screenings, Seminars, Q&As and Master Classes.
