Media Practice

Media Practice research at Sussex

Our media practice faculty includes specialists in documentary and fiction film-making, radio and sound production, digital media production, digital media technologies, and photography. We produce films, multi-media installations, radio programmes and conduct ground-breaking research with academic and industrial partners on a national and international scale.

We undertake social research and explore the history and contemporary development of media systems - considering the role of media systems in public culture and the social world. We also ask how the media contributes to everyday life - and produce monographs and collections, contribute to key international journals, engage in joint research projects with external partners, and contribute to international forums and conferences.

The 26 Doctoral students in Media Practice are part of a community of around 90 doctoral students working across the entire range of our subject specialisms in our School. Post-doctoral and visiting researchers from across the world also use our specialist facilities.

Bethany's student perspective

'Having tutors that are still producing media projects and know their subjects well has allowed me to grow as a documentary filmmaker and given me both theoretical and practical knowledge to produce films that I'm proud of. Combining the tutors' broad and expert knowledge with opportunities to connect with companies in various media domains, the course and the university experience has been everything that I had hoped for and the emphasis on the practical skills has fuelled my drive further to work in the industry.'
