The Department of Media and Film houses a diverse group of internationally recognised faculty. We have over 30 academic faculty including research professors, junior faculty starting out on their research career, and experienced researchers at senior or reader level.
A number of our faculty are part-time and continue to engage in professional practice. Our research culture also includes almost 90 doctoral students across the entire range of our subject specialisms. We also host post-doctoral and visiting researchers from across the world.
Our media and communications researchers work on media theory, social and cultural analysis of media forms, practices and technologies; on questions of the media and citizenship, journalism; on globilisation and the transformation of the media, on science and its mediation, on digital media forms and cultures, on representation, sense perception, on media memories, and the mediated practice of everyday life, on sexuality, feminism and media histories.
We undertake social research, explore the history and contemporary development of media systems, consider their aesthetics, their role in public culture and the social world. We ask how the media contributes to everyday life and helps to produce contemporary social subjects.
We produce monographs and collections, contribute to key international journals, engage in joint research projects with external partners of all kinds, and contribute to international forums and conferences. Our media practice faculty includes specialists in documentary film-making, digital media productions of all kinds, motion capture, digital technologies, and photography. Our work has found platforms at national and international levels. We produce films, mount exhibitions and conduct ground-breaking research with academic and industrial partners.
We welcome research collaborations of all kinds and at all levels.
