Towards the end of the Spring Term, students select a topic for their summer research project, and are assigned a supervisor. The research project should include a substantial practical (programming) element. At the end of August, students submit a 12000-word masters thesis, and may be asked to give a short oral presentation on their work. Some projects have industrial involvement. Part time students start work on their projects in the summer of the first year, and complete it in the second year.
