How to use this guide

This guide is designed for visiting and exchange students from outside the UK who wish to study at the University of Sussex, usually as part of a degree at their home university. The following steps will help you to use this guide to choose modules and submit your application.

1. How long do you want to study for?

Decide how long you wish to study at Sussex – for the full year or part of a year.

2. Choose your modules

Choose the modules you would like to take from the online module listings which contain descriptions, credits and terms.

In making your selection:

  • take account of any prerequisite knowledge required and the level (year) of the module
  • check the method of assessment. Be cautious about overloading yourself with too many modules with a type of assessment that you find difficult.
  • choose alternative modules in case your first choices are not available
  • you may wish to include one of the Special programmes (Junior Year AbroadInternational Summer School or Global Studies Junior Year Abroad)
  • if your first language is not English, consider taking English language modules prior to beginning your academic programme.

3. Check your credits

Ensure that the credits for your chosen modules add up to the recommended total for the time you will spend at Sussex. (For details, see the module listings.)

4. Apply!

Download the application form and submit the completed application form before the following deadlines:

For 2013-2014 entry:
1 April if you plan to start in September.
15 October if you plan to start in January.

For 2014-2015 entry
1 May if you plan to start in September.
15 October if you plan to start in January.

You are advised to submit your application as early as possible, as modules fill up quickly. For further information on how to apply, see a step-by-step guide to applying.
