Developing Literacies in a Global Context (816X3)
30 credits, Level 7 (Masters)
Spring teaching
This module will explore different models of language and literacy/ies-development in formal/informal contexts, from early childhood through schooling to adult literacy, across international contexts and theoretical perspectives. It will interrogate the concept of literacy/ies and multiliteracies, investigating how these are enacted in policy and practice globally, considering the sustainable development goals and social-justice issues.
Questions include:
- How do young children acquire language(s) and communication modes within the home – and school?
- What are the implications of multilingualism and multiliteracies for schooling?
- How do children and adults learn to read and engage with reading, writing and multimodal practices?
- What is ‘voice’?
