Advancing Professional Practice (X1030)

30 credits, Level 7 (Masters)

Spring teaching

In this module, you'll enhance your ITE Curriculum knowledge in a distinct school environment, preparing for Qualified Teacher Status through a contrasting second placement, fulfilling Initial Teacher Training requirements (DfE, 2023). This experience, integrating with the Reflecting on Professional Knowledge assignment, involves:

  • an induction on school policies and a comprehensive programme to observe and engage with specialist teaching practices
  • weekly mentor sessions tailored to your subject/phase, aimed at refining your pedagogical skills, alongside regular professional development seminars
  • a gradually increasing teaching timetable, culminating in near-full-time teaching experience in the latter weeks, across various educational stages
  • continuous assessment and feedback mechanisms, including PebblePad for monitoring progress, weekly formal observations by mentors, and additional evaluations by professional and curriculum tutors
  • participation in Intensive Training and Practice weeks focusing on crucial ITE curriculum areas, access to school resources, and involvement in school activities
  • dedicated time for critical reflection, lesson planning, and resource preparation.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 75 hours of contact time and about 225 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum. We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
