Audio Features (024P3)
15 credits, Level 7 (Masters)
Autumn teaching
Using models derived from the BBC, Public Radio in the US and other broadcasters from around the world, this module will introduce you to a wide range of radio and podcast journalism (from documentaries to features to essays).
You will study different aesthetic modes for factual audio-casts, as well as different approaches to creating audio narrative. After closely listening to various examples of radio/audio journalism, you will produce your own audio project of 7-9 minutes (packaged for the web) on a non-fiction subject in a style of your choice, but with a strong and clear narrative structure.
You will be encouraged to critically reflect on your own journalism practice within the theoretical context covered during the module and will produce a written reflection as part of the final assessment.

Contact hours and workload
This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 36 hours of contact time and about 114 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
