Research focuses on the early years of the British mandate in Palestine, with specific reference to the town of Nablus.

Research

My research interests are mainly focussed on the British mandate in Palestine following the end of World War 1: with an emphasis on policy towards the Palestinian Arab population, with a particular focus on the town of Nablus and its surrounding region.

I am also interested in the relationship between the Nablus - Tulkarm - Jenin 'triangle' and the countries of Lebanon and Syria to the North, both in terms of commercial exchanges and political and cultural influences: within the broader context of Anglo-French imperial rivalry during the mandate years.

My related interests include urban development, cultural and national identity, and relations with colonial powers for people aspiring to independence. I am also interested in the impact of geographic location - as discussed in the work of Fernand Braudel in relation to the Mediterranean region.
