Applying for housing

Our Admissions team will email you the link to the on-line housing application from March.
Once you have applied for housing, please check your email regularly as all communication will be by email.

Click the question below for the answer:

For September 2013 entry, all first year full time undergraduates applying through UCAS who firmly accept an offer of a place for the following September are guaranteed a place in university managed housing provided we receive your housing application by the 1st August.

All eligible first year full time postgraduates coming for a full academic year AND who are studying for a research degree OR are from outside the EU and studying a taught masters programme, are guaranteed a place in university managed housing provided we receive your housing application AND £250 prepayment by the 1st August.  If you are sponsored, or believe that you have a valid reason not to pay the £250 pre-payment, you must provide proof before 1 August for our consideration to: housing@sussex.ac.uk

Assuming you have applied for housing and are guaranteed housing, details of your housing allocation will be sent to you via email typically as follows:

The University has accommodation available for students with a range of disabilities, including those making use of a wheelchair, or who have hearing or visual impairments and care support. Other special medical needs may also be taken into account when allocating accommodation, depending upon their severity. All accommodation is subject to availability and we request that if you have a special request of this type, that you provide us with as much notice as possible.

Trans* We welcome applications from people considering making personal gender transitions at Sussex, or who have recently made a personal transition, and you are able to indicate, if you wish, on the online housing application, so that we can provide you with links to support resources if that helps and so that we can consider any suitable adjustments with your input.  Sharing this information is entirely discrentionary.

We set aside areas for undergraduates and postgraduates and usually keep both groups together and not mix.  However, there are exceptions, for example, mature students may benefit from living with postgraduates who tend to be a little older than the majority of freshers and whom have typically lived away from home before.  All allocations are subject to availability.

All family flats (the majority of which are only suitable for a couple and one small child), are constantly in heavy demand and availability cannot be guaranteed. The University therefore strongly recommends that students do not arrange for their family to come from abroad unless they have a firm offer of a flat or they have made alternative arrangements in the private rented sector.

We typically allocate mature students (those over 21 years of age) with other mature students or students who have lived off-campus before or who are a little older than the majority of freshers, for example, postgraduates.

You will be able to specify the residential area in which you would prefer to live and every effort will be made to allocate you to your preferred residences. However, depending on the specific demand, it may be that we are unable to meet all preferences. If you do not get your preferred choice of housing you can put your name on the housing swap list which opens on the first day of term.

Sussex has a policy of integrating students from home and overseas. There are however, areas that international students can apply to live in with other international students, subject to availability.

The accommodation is predominantly mixed sex; however there are some single sex flats available and you should note this request on your application for our consideration.  Again, all allocations are subject to availability.
