Residences

On campus residencesThere are seven different areas of accommodation on campus and a wide variety of residences off campus. In total, we are able to house nearly 3,500 students. Each of the residences is managed by a building manager who, supported by a team of porters and housekeeping staff, is responsible for looking after the area.

All of the residences are self-catered with shared kitchens and communal areas (with the exception of the studio flats). The majority share bath/shower/toilet facilities and are mixed-sex, although we do have a small number of all-female flats available.

Detailed information about the residences can be found on each residence page of this website.

Facilities
All residences are heated and furnished with a bed, desk and chair, bookshelf and wardrobe/hanging rail and most rooms have their own sink. Students usually prefer to bring their own bed linen; however if required a set of quality new bedding (including duvet and cover, bottom sheet, pillow and case) can be purchased from Residential Services upon arrival for £35.

The kitchens are equipped with cookers, fridge-freezers, kettle and most have microwaves. You can either bring your own cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils or you can purchase a catering pack from us for £17.50.

Cleaning
Communal areas are cleaned on a regular basis but this does not include washing up. You are responsible for keeping your own room (and where applicable, bathroom) clean and tidy.

Maintenance and Management Standards
The University is responsible for ensuring that your accommodation is kept in repair. If you notice any problems, please report the matter to your porter in the first instance, who will arrange for the repair to be fixed. We have guidelines for completing repairs within a fixed period of time and, if we fail to meet this standard, will consider requests for compensation.

The University has signed up to the UUK Code of Practice and will use this as our guide to good management practice.

Internet/Telephone access
All on campus residences and some off campus residences are connected to the university network. Students must provide their own computers/laptops to make use of this facility.

Telephones are provided in each room on campus and information on how to connect is available in each study bedroom.

Smoking
Most of our accommodation is now non-smoking. In some areas, however, students may smoke in their rooms but not the communal areas. We will do our best to allocate students according to their preference although this does not constitute a guarantee.

Residential Advisors
Residential Advisors (RAs) are predominantly second and third year students who live within the residences and have responsibility for a group of first year students. Their function is to provide basic information, help along communal living and be a port of call for new students experiencing problems. They are likely to be the first students you will get to know after arriving and will help you settle into your new residential area.

Security and Personal Safety
The University takes student safety very seriously. The University Security Office is located on the ground floor of York House and security officers patrol the campus 24 hours. All security staff are qualified first aiders and can respond quickly to emergencies. A part of the service is that they can provide escort facilities after dark for lone students if requested.
