Satisfied students place Sussex in UK top 10
More than 90% of Sussex students are satisfied with the quality of their course, according to the results of the National Student Survey (NSS) for 2010, published today (18 August).
These results place Sussex equal 7th for student satisfaction for universities in the UK - up from 35th in 2009. Sussex ranks alongside Oxford and Cambridge and among the leading research-intensive universities in the UK.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Farthing, said: "These results show a sustained and significant improvement in student satisfaction at Sussex. They reflect the excellent quality of the student experience which we offer. The fact that our scores in the National Student Survey have improved for the third year in a row shows that we are listening to the feedback from thousands of our students."
The 90% score for Sussex is for Question 22 which scores the "overall satisfaction" with students' courses. The average score for the University of Sussex across all 22 questions in the survey was 83% (compared to a national average for all universities of 75%). This was a rise of more than five percentage points from 77% in 2009 - while the change across the higher education sector was a one percentage point rise. Sussex improved its score for every one of the 22 questions and every one of the seven measures into which they are grouped.
Many of the individual 22 subjects at Sussex also ranked highly, coming in the top 10 in the UK for ten subjects:
- Psychology (4th of 103)
- Sociology (4th of 83)
- Human and Social Geography (4th of 37)
- Computer Science (5th of 102)
- English (6th of 98)
- Biochemistry (6th of 24)
- Mathematics (7th of 53)
- Media Studies (8th of 72)
- American Studies (8th of 10)
- Spanish (10th of 24)
Sussex was ranked in the top 20 in a further eight subjects.
