World première for Sussex grad at BBC Proms

Tune in to BBC Radio 3 at 7pm today (18 July) and you’ll get to hear the world première of a new composition by a Sussex music alumnus.

Fung Lam, who completed his doctorate in Music Composition in May this year, was commissioned to write a piece for the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

And the nine-minute work, Endless Forms, will be performed for the first time this evening, as part of the annual BBC Proms in London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Fung Lam is a Proms first-timer but this is his third commission from the BBC.

He says: “Endless Forms was inspired by the last sentence of Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species, and celebrates the insight into the diversity of life.

“The title also relates to Buddhism's view of life as endless cycles of forms: birth, death, rebirth.”

The concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and is then available online on BBC iPlayer for seven days.
