The focus for research in this area is the Centre for Research in Opera and Music Theatre (CROMT), which was established in 2005 and is the first university research centre dedicated to this area of study.
CROMT is a national and international centre for research and development in the practice and theory of contemporary opera, music-based theatre and other forms of musical multi-media performance. The Centre promotes innovative artistic and critical practices across a range of forms through academic programmes, creative and theoretical research projects, and research collaborations with professional and educational partners. Its activities include conferences, symposia, workshops and performances, often in collaboration with partner institutions in the Sussex region (e.g. Glyndebourne opera) and elsewhere in the UK and Europe. CROMT attracts doctoral students engaged in both practice-based and critical research, and Visiting Research Fellows in the same fields.
